We asked Shane Horgan, GM of Sales for Tate's Raised Access Floor Division, what architects and designers commonly get wrong when it comes to sustainability in this space. Here's what he told us:

Carbon offsetting is as good as a Low Embodied Carbon product. Both approaches can land the same score under GBCA ( Green Building Council of Australia), but the Low Embodied Carbon approach is far superior.

It's a distinction worth sitting with. Offsetting addresses emissions after the fact, while a Low Embodied Carbon product reduces the impact at the source, before it ever enters the building's footprint. For specifiers weighing up raised access floor systems, this is a timely reminder to look past the score and understand the approach behind it.

Great design isn't only structural — it's felt by the people who use the building every day. Billi Australia looks at what happens in the final metres of a water system, and how building design directly protects occupant health in the hybrid era.

We asked the Billi Australia team what's one practical takeaway attendees will be able to apply immediately after the presentation.

Consider and specify drinking water early in the design process. Think about how the building or fit-out will actually be used, where drinking water is needed, how frequently those areas will be occupied and how the system will perform in real-life conditions. Early consideration allows drinking water to become part of the overall design and coordination rather than something addressed at the end.

It's a reminder that water quality isn't a fixture decision made at the end of a project, it's a design decision made at the start. For specifiers, that means bringing Billi into the conversation well before fit-out, not after.
