Industry Highlights: The 5 Must-See Moments at Melbourne Design Week 2026

Melbourne Design Week is officially here, and this year’s program feels like a major tipping point for our industry. Moving far beyond abstract concepts, MDW 2026 is tackling the hard questions of regenerative design, spatial memory, and material flows in real-time.

From circular economics to radical artistic collaborations, the conversations happening across the city this week are shaping the future of Australian architecture and interiors. If you are planning your schedule, these are the five absolute standouts, industry innovators, and brilliant client initiatives you cannot afford to miss.

1. The Zero-Waste Revolution in Construction

The Event:
Build a Future: From Circularity to Real Zero in Construction

The Collaborators: Breathe Architecture & Pelagic.Earth

When it comes to treating waste as a high-value resource rather than an inevitability, Breathe Architecture and Pelagic.Earth are true recycling heroes. This exhibition and panel series tackles the embodied carbon crisis head-on, proving that scaling circular construction is entirely possible right now.

We are incredibly proud to see our own clients leading by example in this space. Trailblazers like Durra Panel (pioneering 100% recyclable, straw-based structural wall and ceiling linings) and Planet Protector are showing the industry exactly how to transition from theory to real-world zero-carbon systems. In fact, having recently done a site visit to Planet Protector ourselves, we've seen firsthand the incredible dedication and innovation that goes into their sustainable material solutions. This event is required viewing for anyone looking to specify the future of green building.

2. High Fashion Meets Sustainable Strategy

The Collaboration:
Cultivated & Romance Was Born – RE:BORN

What happens when premium furniture restoration meets the unbridled, avant-garde creativity of Australian fashion royalty? You get RE:BORN, a spectacular, high-concept creative partnership between Cultivated and Romance Was Born.

Cultivated has long been the gold standard for structural renewal, buy-back circularity, and giving iconic design a second life. By injecting Romance Was Born’s signature storytelling and textile vibrancy into the mix, RE:BORN proves that sustainable practices can be profoundly beautiful, highly collectible, and utterly distinct. (Plus, we are incredibly thrilled to be working more closely with the visionary team at Cultivated very soon!)

3. Breathing New Life Into Forgotten Spaces

The Event:
Inside Adaptive Reuse: The Spaces Between

The Practice: Buchan

Buchan Inside Adaptive Reuse The spaces between

The greenest building is often the one that already exists. This year, the embodied-carbon conversation is expanding deeply into our existing building stock, and Buchan is right at the forefront with Inside Adaptive Reuse: The Spaces Between.

This tour explores how architects can thoughtfully step into the thresholds of old buildings, respecting historical character while retrofitting them for contemporary utility. This focus on breathing new life into old structures reminds us of the fascinating insights shared in our recent talk with Spaces That Speak and Fender Katsalidis. Just like that discussion, Buchan’s insights offer an invaluable masterclass in how to navigate the complex layers of memory, structure, and modern compliance to revitalise our urban landscapes.

4. A Masterclass in Emotional and Spatial Conviction

The Event:
David Flack in Conversation

The Practice: Flack Studio

In Conversation with David Flack

For interior designers and architects, Tuesday night’s exclusive in-conversation with David Flack is the definitive, hot-ticket event of the week. Sitting down with NGV curator Dr. Timothy Moore, the founder of Flack Studio will reflect on a decade of crafting contemporary spaces of exceptional character.

Flack’s work is celebrated for its spatial experimentation, material richness, and uncompromising honesty. In a market that occasionally rewards short-lived novelty, this discussion promises a candid, refreshing look at how a distinctive practice is built and sustained through pure conviction, creative integrity, and a deep connection to the artistic community.

5. Cultivating Spatial Refuge in the City

The Event:
A Place Between

The Practice: DKO Architecture

DKO A Place Between

Tucked inside an empty, dormant warehouse in Collingwood, DKO Architecture (alongside collaborators BYO Living, PROCESS, and Unios) has created a breathtaking temporary sanctuary. A Place Between reactivates an industrial shell suspended between its historical past life and whatever comes next.

We might be a little biased because the wonderful DKO team happens to be our neighbours of The Arc Agency's Melbourne office, but this installation is genuinely spectacular. Functioning like a textile tent lightly pitched within a rigid urban landscape, it reflects architecture’s most fundamental responsibility: providing moments of shared shelter, pause, and collective presence. Hosting informal industry talks, immersive lighting by Unios, and creative performances, it is the perfect physical embodiment of the intersections we love most—community, memory, and brilliant spatial design.
